I have an African Knifefish that we've had for about two years. He's done very well and has been a very healthy fish since we got him. This past Thursday I gravel vaced out the tank and added new water, which had been sitting with Prime in it for about 15 minutes before I added the new water. I distinctly remember seeing the Knifefish come out of his sunken log (fake wood) while I was cleaning out the tank and he looked just fine. This was around noon time.
The next day, in the evening around 7 p.m., I was walking past the fish tank and happened to notice the Knife swimming around. He usually doesn't come out of his sunken log that often, so I stopped and watched him. To my horror, his right eye was terribly cloudy, such that you couldn't see the pupil or anything. All the other fish in my tank are perfectly healthy, none have cloudy eyes and none are seeming to have any other problems at all. At first I thought it might be cloudy eye, but held off on administering Melafix until I knew for sure that's what it was, and that it was safe to give to Knifefish. I was a little doubtful about it being cloudy eye though, as this condition literally developed overnight.
I just went and checked on my fish this morning. All of my other fish still look very healthy and none of their eyes are clouded at all. I got the Knife to come out and he looks worse. His eye is still just as cloudy as before, but where his pupil is supposed to be is a large bloody red spot. It looks as if he just lost his entire pupil leaving a blood red hole in the center of the rest of his remaining eye. His other eye is perfectly normal and he is behaving perfectly normal. The other fish in the tank are completely healthy and also behaving normally. I'm not sure if this is cloudy eye, an injury, or something else. Unfortunately, I don't have a digital camera, so I won't be able to post pictures. I hope this is enough of an explanation.
