Okay I don't want to be flamed on my stupitidy on some aspects here

So every day after I get in from work I normall go straight to my tank stick my hand in and pull algae out
(I have a planted tank) Without turning the heater off

but Lastnight I was setting a Raid 0 on my pc with two Raptor drives so ignored the tank,
Eventually I look at the tank and thought "hmm the heater don't look normal"

So out of the normal I turned it off and stuck my hand in to check it.
Only to find it was cracked and filled with water.
Could have had 240V through me and I'd no longer need Gel for my hair :)

Only conclusion for it to crack is an Air bubble must have been caught under it after it was ejected from the filter outlet (lesson learned in more ways than one)

only thing that has suprised me is the DAMN SNAILS DIDNT DIE

p.s no fish were harmed in the making of this as they are in a different tank :)

Hmm...what do you mean, air buble got stuck under it? I don't understand, please explain. My heater is pretty close to my filter, bubles could VERY EASILY get stuck under it. Please explain in all details!

i never turn my power off unless i am doing a water change... should i turn it off any time i put my hands in?

well i never turn mine of either if im doing a big water change i just push the heater below the water

That is the reason I've ditched all of my glass heaters. I've had 2 break on me. I use the plastic visitherm stealth deals, and they're very nice. Not sure if they're available on your side of the pond or not, though.

I notice alot of panic,

you should ALWAYS turn your heater off before placing your hand inside.

If I didn't upgrade my PC I would have been badly hurt or injured, (I learned my lesson)

Regards to the bubbles this is only a guess.

My heater is fully submerged and sitting in a cradle (plastic thingy)
as bubbles come out of the filter the catch under the heater and cradle making a large air gap.
when the Filter turns on it creates a super heated area where the air gap is increasing the chance to crack ALOT.

ALWAYS TURN HEATER OFF BEFORE PLACING HAND INSIDE (any electric appliance even )

p.s the make is Visitherm

You had a lucky escape there. In the past I haven't turned heaters, filters, lights or pumps off while maintaining my tanks. Thanks for the warning. I'll change my practices from now on.
