Cleaning Sand?

The gravel vacuum, I want 1 but i have both sand and gravel in my fish tank , so how can I clean sand , can I buy a gravel vacuum and modify it for sand too?

Rotate the gravel vacuum a about 3 cm (1.5in) above the surface of the sand to suck up in a whirlpool what is laying on top of it. Another way is to run a everday aquarium net through it just like a cat litter box (the sand will fall through leaving just the waste), but be sure to turn off your filter when doing this and keep any biological media you have floating in a separate bucket of tank water as to not kill your beneficial bacteria filter.
