Cleaning sand substrate

Has anyone have any hints or tips on cleaning a sand substrate? I've used a gravel vac but the sand comes up with the dirt, then the dirt drops down with the sand . I need HELP

For sand, because it's difficult to imagine the food dropping between the individual grains, all I do is vacuum the top of it where the visible poo is, and then run my finger through it and repeat. Brings all the poo to the surface.

So it's "technique" and "bit of practice", so glad I've got a mains powered gravel cleaner. Just hope I don't spill to much when I'm doing the "small circular motions".
