I have been reading up on how to look after my fish, and I can see that you are meant to do regular water changes. But how often do you clean the tank out completely? When I kept goldfish, every few months I would take everything out, wash it all, and completely fill the tank with clean water. Really I should have done it more as they got really stinky

The other question is where do I put the fish when cleaning out? I used to stick the goldfish in a bucket for a few hours, but obviously I can't do that with tropical ones because of the temperature of the water.

If you are running an "aquarium" as opposed to a "fish tank" you generally have a filter, substrate (gravel or sand etc) maybe plants... the idea is to get the lot to maturity, so they can process fish waste into harmless (relatively) substances, which are then removed with water changes.
Getting your aquarium to this stage is called "cycling" and can be done either with or without fish, although the current trend is "fishless" - theres loads of posts on this - have a read.
So totally "cleaning" the aquarium is not only unnecessary... its actually harmfull !
