Cleaning Ornaments

I am trying to clean a fish tank ornament with thick algae on it. I have tried using a tooth brush but it wont work. The only that I can find that works is using bleach, however it removes the colour off of the ornament and ruins it. Any ideas? Thanks

I used to use a scouring pad, it worked very well, but soaking in hot water first made it easier

Thanks 4 replies. Tried hot water 1st didn't do much. I've sorted it now anyway used very diluted bleach then dipped in the toothbrush. Worked well.
