Cleaning New Sand

Hi guys i am going to buy some silica sand for my fish tank and i was wondering how abouts you go about cleaning it. before you put it in your tank and is sand alright for growing plants in

yes sand is fine. i grow my tank in my signature with regular sand. all u need to do is fill a bucket up about half way with sand, and take the hose and fill it with water, preferably outside, and keep swirling the sand around and dumping the silt and dirty water out, over and over untill you can tell the sand is settling without any silt (dirty water) constantly floating. just dump out the stuff that floating and eventually ur sand will pretty much stay on the bottom, and ur water will run clear. its really easy, and sand is great for fish too!!

Ive just cleaned 10kg of sand, i split it in half and put it into an old pillow case. I then ran the bath and letthe water flow through it u till it ran clear. I swilled it around alot, its suprising how dirty it is.

I bought sand from my lfs and there were sweet wrappers and fag butts in it once.
