Hi everyone
My tank has been going for 2-3 months now. At first I was plagued by the dreaded brown diatoms on the glass - was told it was common, will probably settle down, and not to fret too much. So I didn't
I don't have much brown now, glass staying pretty clear but I've got different types ALL over my plants. Fuzzy whitish stuff, bright green stuff, and darker green (I think 'beard' algae based off some pictures), My tanks about 39 gallons. It's starting to look really yucky.
Is now the time to get some kind of algae-eater? I have one snail but he just ain't cutting it. Don't really want more snails. A lot of people seem to rave about the otos and how they can clean things up quite quickly - they seem appealing to me because they're so tiny. Will they eat most of the types of algae? I know some alleged 'algae-eaters' will only eat one type....I'm looking for something which will ideally eat most types. What would my best options be? I have lots of plants already - I know adding more fast growers is usually an option but I think I'm as full as I want to be. What would you guys recommend based on your experiences?
Also,
I want to take some cuttings from some of my fast-grower plants to transfer and grow in a new 5 gallon. Cept I don't want to put them in covered in all that crap!
Is there a way to clean it off entirely before I transfer it over? I know you can soak plants in a bleach solution to kill snail eggs and the like - is there something like that you can do to clean algae off? Can someone describe strengths of solutions/how long to soak etc to me?
Thanks heaps
