I am wanting to do a unit in which we set up a fish tank in the classroom and will be using fish-out cycle. My only problem is, we won't be there to test the water or feed the bacteria during the weekend. Do you think the bateria will hold out that long or will be starting over at the beginning of every week?

I was thinking this afternoon. What if I use a peice of media from home. Would this make it so I should be able to get through the weekend safely?

The bacteria will be fine over the weekend.

They will not die off that fast.

On average, if no ammonia is present, the bacteria will die off at a rate of 3-10% a day. But you won't have 0 ammonia in the tank the entire weekend. As the cycle progresses and you colonize more bacteria, your tank might reach 0 ammonia for a day or so, nothing to worry about.

If you add a piece of mature filter media from your tank at home, you will speed up the cycling process as that piece of filter media will contain some beneficial bacteria already.

You can also add extra ammonia to the tank before you go for the weekend.
