I have a 54 litre tank set up. It houses 4 parosphromenus dayi, 6 harlequin rasboras, 2 betta smaragdina and 2 licorice gouramis.

It's heavily planted with a lot of driftwood for hiding places. I decided to get the licorice gouramis and betta smaragdinas after I talked with the store I bought the dayis from. I was assured by 2 different guys that my set-up was just fine and that all the fish would get along and that I wouldn't be overstocked.

If you go by the 1 inch per gallon rule I would be considered overstocked but all of the fish are very slim fish that dont produce a lot of waste. They are also small fish. The licorice gouramis are less than an inch.

Heres my tank so what do you all think? Do you think its overstocked or does the 1 inch per gallon rule have room to bend?

The inch per gallon rule is more a guideline than a rule and more often then not there are exceptions to it. IMO it's not overstocked. Looks nice too. :)

the 1 inch per gallon rule is a very vague rule of thumb and to be honest i do not go by it.

I am not sure if your overstocked but your tank...WOW

nice looking tank, as long as you do water changes and cleaning ect you can slightly overstock your tank but dont go mad, however you should consider that your fish will grow so you should leave some splace for growth.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the tank

Betta Smaragdina..they are a wild type of betta  I'll try and get some pictures of them up soon. Right now they are just settling in so they arn't looking too pretty.
