im looking at getting a pair of convicts for a 23 gallon fish tank and i am wondering about fish that they can go with i was wondering if it is worth the money of buying a pelco and just having them and the pelco or should i get some other cichlid like an oscar or electric blue?

Going by my small amount of knowledge on Convict cichlids a 23 gallon tank is to small for two....at least 20 gallons I read for a convict and 25 per mated pair...so best to over filter and I doubt anything could go with them

how about angelfish? are they able to breed in a tank thats 21 gallons? or do i think smaller? if so do you have any suggestions?

I haven`t had much experience with Angels, I would wait and see if anyone else can advise.

I do know that Angels get quite bid and need a tall tank, I think the min is 18" tall.

If you really want Cichlids in your tank you could look at the Dwarf variety, fairly small and not over aggresive.

Here`s the link to a good guide.

my tank is 19" tall so would angels be a good idea? id like to give small angels a try in a community aquarium

Angels like tall tanks, honestly. :( Sorry to burst your bubble on that one. :( My family tried a few angels went I was younger, but never with any success.

I have an Oscar now and he seems to like his 55 gallon tank, with pleco buddy.

I've heard convicts and 29 plus gallon tank.

I have a 20 gallon tank, and I use it for barbs. I have 9 of them, 1 fish over stocked. I have 3 tiger, green tiger, and albino tigers. They are a lot of fun to watch, if you are looking for very active fish.

My Oscar is much more subdued. He just kind of floats around, until he wants to be somewhere. LOL

A breeding pair of angels would be good in a 20g tank, if it's tall enough, but it's really just not enough room for a grown angelfish for long term. They can get BIG if taken care of properly.

For a 20g if you want something to breed and be a permanent home, try rams (German or Bolivian), African shelldwellers or a pair of kribs.

Yeah, I'm real observant, aren't I :p

19" is a good height for angels :)

Just wanted to comment that I agree with the majority here...

Angels get much bigger than you think they will, and a 20 gallon just isn't large enough for them.
One of the problems with convicts is...they are super aggressive when they are breeding, but if they don't have anything to defend against sometimes they will turn on each other. A 20 gallon just doesn't give enough territory/escape room.

If you really want something that will breed you'll have to consider your water parameters a bit more. If hard/alkaline water (pH over 8 ) then I'd definitely go with the African shell dwellers, if softer/acidic water (pH of 7.4 or less) then I'd swing towards the SA dwarfs like Rams or Apistos.

i dont get shell dwellers down here the kribensis cichlids seem nice but i heard that they are verry aggressive bolivian rams are a good choice but im starting to reconsider them they seem a bit to plain blue rams are nice but i know nothing about them whats another name for shell dwellers my pet store gets in lots of princess cichlids are these shell dwellers?
