to cut a long story short my young cichlid has had to be put in a tank with a guppie for a few days.
I have been watching them closely and the cichlid dosent seem to be botherd with the guppie... the guppie on the other hand just wont leave the cichlid alone, has been chasing him around the tank for the last 5 hours on and off.
The guppie is the last remaining one i have from a group of ten, do you think he is excited to have a friend again finally or has got to used to being on his own and isnt happy with his new cichlid room mate?

The cichlid is around the same size as the guppy at the moment but not sure the exact age of him/her?

What kind of cichlid is it? In a few days it should stop when the cichlid settles and if it's an african rift lake cichlid or any of the 'non-dwarf' cichlids you'll end up with a dead guppy.

it is a malawi chiclid, not sure which exactly blue with black stripes.
As long as he can last until tomorow or maybe friday they will be seperated again by that time.

i see your from gloucestershire also jayjay, which lfs do you use round the area , i hear the aquatic habitat in shurdingtom is apparently the best, is there any others i should check out?

yeah, africans can exercise a certain amount of tolerance, but when they decide they have had enough, goodbye guppy.

sometimes little fish know not what they are messing with. they see big colorful fish and they are like "ooh , look at the pretty big fishy", not knowing it's a potential killer. and they pester and chase until mr. cichlid turns around and lets little fishy know what time of day it is!

Indeed I am from Gloucester, LFS I buy from are Aquatic Habitat and others though I go to Bristol mainly, more of the sort of things I want down there.

LFS for you too have a look at I reccomend -

Aquatic Habitat
Aqua Jardin
World of water
Pets @ Home (if you want to buy tanks)
Churchdown aquatics (if you have nothing better to do, it's pretty poor)

Then the rest I use are in Bristol, bit out of the way.

I went to the one down whitminster today (think it's world of water) they seem to have got a lot of cichlids in , they had convict's, jewel's and a tank labeld assorted malawi cichlid with about 15 - 20 of diffrent colour variations and another tank with about 10 in that wasnt labeld but they were a diffrent kind again. wish my new big tank was ready and i would have bought me some, £8.95 each if i recall correctly. though

Personally I don't buy stuff from there, unless I can't get it else where.

Almondsbury garden centre has a quite a few nice cichlids if your ever there.

Aquatic Habitat also often has african Malawi lake cichlids in.

i never used to buy from them either, but it seems a lot better there now since they re-fitted the fish room.

May pop down to almonsbury when my new tank is finally cycled and see what they have.

It's better now but I've still noticed alot of disease in the tanks, mainly whitespot.
