Setting up a new 135 Gal tank 72x18x24 I will be putting my large Angel and my Clown loaches in it..It will be a well planted tank with lots of rocks/wood/plants
I will be using sand for a base coverd by Course Gravel.

here is a list of Cichlids I am looking into:

some will work out fine some will not but keep in mind they will not all be going into this tank alot of it will boil down to what the LFS has in stock when I am ready to make my purchase.

Anybody keep any of these fish and if so what are your findings with them..
I don't plan on breeding any of them so mated pairs will not be needed..also would be wise to keep one of each kind or should I get 2-3 of each ??
:)

a couple things. you have the right idea in getting the large tank so that is a pat on the back for you.

1. I wouldn't include the aulonocara in your list as they are african and IMO it is bad juju to mix the two.

2. again IMO fishprofiles isn't the best place to get info on fish. I have seen too many mistakes with their information.

and 3 the nics( not parrot) are going to be the biggest fish in there. a true parrot is a totally different fish from south america, extreamly rare, and from what I hear from other fish keepers that have them very hard to both sex and raise.

If you get more than one type of apisto, they with cross-breed and "weaken" the genetic line (they will breed if the conditions are right). For apistos, you could keep no more than one male (unless you have enough space for territories).
You could keep a pair of Apistos, or a harem (1m,2-3f). If you only want one, go for the male because that's where the color is.

Nicks really are nicknamed parrot..that name isn't used often however.

Nicks def would NOT work in a tank with angels.

Thanks for the info guys !!

Like I said I was just looking at those fish...really will boil down to the LFS, the easiest thing for me to do is get a few more angels and a school of smaller fish, Tetras for example...

what are some good sites to do cichlid research ??

Thanks

I will agree that in the past there was a lot of incorrect information in the profiles at www.fishprofiles.com. however, a new profile system has been implemented and regular members can submit changes to the profiles and have them voted on by other members and with the right number of votes the changes are made. I have personally gone through most of the profiles of Central american cichlids and a few of the south american cichlids and I know of at least one other person that has been in the hobby for over 2 decades and has a ton of knowledge that has also spent a lot of time correcting some of the false information. long story short, most of the profiles over there should be much more accurate now. :)

Cool, Thanks

I was simply using that site as a starting point for my research and of course it will continue till the day I buy my first new fish !!

I have a few months to go before I have all the equipment ready to really build the tank and make it a complete package so I have plenty of time until then to learn..

I still need the following items

filters
heaters
lights

a better paying job
win the lotto

:p

I'll keep posting my findings and thoughts and any info is always welcome..
