I have a juvenile cichlid that I need to identify. I know it could be hard since it is a juvenile and if it is female it will make it even harder. My only clues are that it was sold as a jaguar, but that is highly unlikely, also it could be a hybrid which makes me weary of this LFS. The markings are vertical tan and black strips on the top half of the body. The eyes are red and there are horizontal black lines extending from the eyes towards the back. Convict or Mayan were the only profiles that seemed plausible.
Pic of the juvenile is posted on my member page, just click my name. :dunno:

sorry need a better pic if you have it. another thing you could do is go back to the lfs and see what is in the tanks next to the one that sold you this. sometimes they will jump into other tanks that are nearby. or could be sloppy fishkeeping. you should check into it. if it is a con and they sold you it as a jaguar i would ask the difference to be refunded. cons are cheap, jaguars are much more expensive fish.

What size tank is it in? I am pretty sure its not a jag. Could be a convict hybrid of some sort. But a better pic is definately in need.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate the feedback and have added a url link to a website with better photos. To tell you the truth I think the possibility of it being a hybrid is highly likely. The spots on the head lead me to believe the lfs in that it does have jaguar blood but the strips of black and tan on the body would prove otherwise. I appreciate your feedback in regard to this. My situation is that I want strictly C.A. and S.A. cichlids; no african cichlids!! SO it is essential that I get the right information on this one.
It is only an inch and a half and sold for less then five dollars and is now in a 10 gal Q.T. with a zig zag eel and two dumb amphibians(rubber eel and African Dwarf frog; they eat all the left over blood worms)
I will nurse it to size and place it in with a 5 inch Green terror and a four inch texas, other wise I have an alternate 55 gal I will cycle and place it in with baby cichlids. The thing is mean though, I see it attack a ghost shrimMy Webpagep bigger then it just to display dominance. So nice.hehehehe

did they have the trade name on the tank or the scientific name? the pics are not very clear to me but this could possibly be a parachromis motaguensis and not a nandopsis managuensis? the juvies resemble the p. motaguensis, or red tiger cichlid.

sorry this was the only pic of juvies i could find on the web
