Hi

Just a small Question !!!!!
This is the third time my chromides have had eggs. (once every month) First time we had babys but they only lasted about four days. Second time they ate the eggs. Now there are eggs again. The Question is how long will they go on breeding for as it looks stressfull for the parents. ( Don't they take a break ? lol )

As long as the conditions are right they may not stop breeding.

and is that a malawi crab in your avatar?

Hi AMS

If they keep breeding will that not be very stressful ?

Yes this is Henry my Malawi Crab !!! lol Lots of work as he is a messy eater . Love watching him very comical to watch. Wouldn't part from him not for all the money in the world.

Thanks

Sabine

It's more of an issue with mouthbrooding cichlids, because they can't feed while looking after the eggs. It's very easy for a female mouthbrooder in particular to lose condition very quickly, because as soon as she releases one batch of fry, the male in the tank is pestering her for another batch. Hence, it's quite common to keep males and females separated with these kinds of fish.

If the fish are feeding normally, egg layers should be fine spawning whenever they want. You do want to make sure they are kept well fed, and that you feed them a varied diet, but otherwise just let nature take its course.

Cheers,

Neale

Why would it be stressful?

LOL no I meant forgot there (typo they) were mouth brooders, not "they are mouth brooders"

EDIT: blonde moment

True, but other ariid catfish have spawned in captivity, so it's certainly possible. Probably more a question of how few people keep a large school of happy, mature shark catfish than anything else. There's probably an issue of figuring out the salinity they need for breeding, too.

Cheers,

Neale

I read that Columbian Cat Sharks don't breed in captivity ???

i'm on my fourth batch of fry now with my chromides - seems to be about every 4 weeks they are spawning. unfortunately my bbg's have quite a taste for chromide fry though - soon as the parents are distracted they start munching away
