Hey Everyone

Today I was thinking about the substrate that i want to put into my 6x2x2 tank when i get it, I really like the look of sand, but maintaining it proby would be a real pain in a 6x2x2 tank, and also trying to get rid of the air pockets, and so on, so ive decieded on gravel, but I was wondering what the different gravels, look like,

I want it to be natural looking, and not like the normal pea gravel, cause that doesnt look natural at all IMO,

So i was wondering if anyone here has pictures to show of gravels in there tank, or has links to different fineness and courseness of gravels available for a tank, I am gonna be using rocks and stones of different sizes all arouind to try and create a natural look, also is a really fine gravel substrate around ?

Thanks all,

Saboy

Well, I know you said you don't like normal pea gravel - but after all it's entirely natural ;) even though you feel it doesn't look it :).

So probably not a gravel type look you'd go for, but this has been in my tank for almost 4 years now and still looks great (not algae covered or discoloured) and very easy to gravel vac - and for debris and waste to sift down.

Which is why I hate sand as all the poo is always floating around on top  and fail very much to see how that's "cleaner".

And this is some black quartz in the other tank.

Why would sand be too difficult to maintain in a 6x2x2?

The only thing that is different is you have more substrate to vacume so it takes longer, but you still have that problem with whatever substrate you choose. Sand is cleaner than gravel as all the dirt stays on top of it rather than sinking into it and is better for the fish no matter which species you keep. Go with sand,

I've found sand to be easier than gravel. As CFC said, it all stays on the surface in easy reach. Most of the fish waste in my tanks is taken up by the filter as well.

I must admit, I like the black gravel. It sets off the fish and plants and gives depth to the tank.

I still need to make a choice, If i dont find a nice gravel that i really like, then i would go for white sand.

THanks bloo for your reply, I quite like your vision 180 !

And thanks to everyone else as well !
