I am going to be cycling my 55 gallon soon and I was wondering which fish I should choose to cycle the tank.
Can you help me?
Which fish should I use to cycle the tank?
How many of that fish should I get?

Plans for the tank:'
pair of angels
pair of banded Gouramis
some platys
neons/cardinals
lg pleco
Mabe some tetras if i have room.........Do I have Rooom?
some plants

Fishless is easier, and itll save you loads of times on water changer that youd be doing. Go fishless, there are many articles in the stickys.

do you have another tank setup and running?

If so have a quick search and 'clone' it (just run the new filter in the old tank for a week or so - then move it to the new tank and add fish. :)

You could fine someone local and ask them to do it for you (whole filter or just the media)

I would go with the fishless cycle. But, if you must cycle your tank with fish. I would go with feeder guppies. They are inexpensive and can be consumed by other fish when you stock your tank.

im doing my fishless and highly recommend it. I arsed up a bit, and it has taken 4 weeks to get any changes on the fishless cycle, but it is now having changes quick an fast.

And that time gave me plenty to research my stock, plants (and buy them) ornaments, and, decor/plant arrangement. Also got a coloured bubble system going.

so the time didnt go wasted, it in fact prevented me rushing in.

IMO..i'd go with fish to cycle the tank. It's a lot more fun when there are actually fish in the tank. If you don't want to use feeder guppies, go with regular guppies. I use regular guppies to cycle my tank, and they are still alive and going well.

i would agree the fish are more fun. though i get lots of amusement telling people about my fish tank and they say "what fish do you have" and i tell them"non, its empty"

sorry for a billion typos right now, think the batteries in my keyboard need replaced. I ove the crdllesskeyboard, just hate batteries running out.

Well, it seems many here are against the cycle, as am I. But, if youre inpatient, from what I heard, Tetras are a good choice.

tetras are a bad choice. they can be grumpy little buggers.

you dont have to put your plants in before starting your fishless cycle. the tank water will still go a bit minging and need a large water change regardless.

I think alot of people will recommend the Danios as one of the best starter fish if doing a fishy cycle.
