Hi i just got a 60 gallon aquarium from my friend and i am about to start the fishless cycling process. i might need help with that later, but for right now i just need to decide what fish to get. :dunno: i did some research, but just wanted to get an opinion on what a good community tank setup would be. i found some fish that i thought looked good but am not sure which ones would get along with eachother. :/

Corydoras Catfish, Gouramis, Angelfish, Neon Tetra, Discus Fish, Swordtail Platy, and Clown Loach.

so if you could tell me which fish and how many of each i should get for my 60 gallon tank it would be much appreciated. (You're welcome to suggest other fish aswell those were just some i thought looked interesting.)

Suggestions will be much appreciated.

Thanks :D

I would not go with the discus, they get big and such... And don't put angelfish with tetras, the angel fish may make a meal of the tetras.

What is your water parameter straight out of the tap? (well, after 24 hours sitting in your room)

You should look into that first... :D

Try to get pH, KH and GH on a tap water that has been sitting outside for 24 hours. This will give any trapped gas chance to escape, and not to mislead your results.

Most of the species you picked will do ok in most water, except for Discus and Neon which generally don't do well in a hard and alkaline water.

If your water does turn out to be really hard and high in pH, you might even be able to try out the driftlake species... :D

yeah i think that my family is getting a water softener installed so it should be soft but im not sure about the ph i still need to get some test kits. :(

I agree with yano dont get the discus they have very different water and temp requirements than most of the fish you have listed. The angel with the tetras is possible if you put the tetras in a couple of weeks before the angels and then just get small 1-1.5 inch angels and then they will grow up together and will be less likely to think of tem as food. Most of the problems with angels comes when you add new small fish to the tank after they are there, they think it is food. The clowns will get large 8-12" and like to be kept in groups, so they will eat up alot of your available space but are great fish. If you get gouramis get a less aggressive type like a pearl or dwarf as they do better in the community environment that you want. HTH :)

U could try rummy nose tetra or some barbs they are great in my community tank.

Discus are real hard fish to keep. With swordtails you could go the whole livebearer route: Mollies, Platies, etc. Even ghost shrip to help clean the bottom. Below is a list of ours. Also check out the Livebearers forum for more help.
