basically you want to check him for visible signs of illness (any fuzz or fluff on his body, signs of finrot(although finrot usually clears up in no time once in a healthy environment), any patches on the skin, worms from their anus, mouthrot, popeye, etc. once he looks ok after a visual inspection, make sure he is active in his environment. vigorous swimming and/or flaring are good signs to look for. once those bases are covered, make sure you get one you like the look of. if you go out and none catch your eye that day, wait a few days and go back. nothing wrong with waiting until you find a healthy one that you want :good:
best of luck
cheers

put your finger on the glass. if they swim up to it, or show any sort of interest (even running away from it) that is a good sign. watch if they interact/how they interact with the bettas in the compartments next to them. just make sure they are swimming ok (not leaning to one side or having trouble maintaining balance) and arent very lethargic.
basically, make sure they have no signs of disease and are swimming properly and acting as a betta should.
cheers

:good: Thanx people

Is it ok to have a plastic/acrylic fish tank (£5 odd one from wilkinsons) with a heater in?

LFS say no cos it will weaken the sides. Have people kept one with a heater in for a while?
Elite cool is made out of the same thing, not glass.

My 10L shrimp tank is made from acrylic and i have a 25W in it. And the tank seems fine atm.

How many litres is it?

i have a 3 gal acrylic tank with a 25 wtt heater. it came with a plastic guard so that the heater cant tuoch the acrylic directly. tank up and running with 0 problems for well over a year.

if the heaters dont come with a guard, you could position a rock at the base of the heater to keep it from touching the sides of the tank.
cheers

11L = 2 gallons so plenty of room for a betta :good:

i have to ask, can you add a pic of the tank so i can see?i may need one one day as a back up

I have a heater in both my acrylic tanks (25 watt in 5 gallon and 50 watt in 12 gallon), they came with a holder but no gurard. I made a guard out of the plastic hair rollers, I have not had a problem, can't see why it would be.

 Yup, ive seen that tank here too. :)

Although 3G is minimum, i suppose 11L would do. Lunar started out in 10L then went into the 65l Community. In most cases, when they get put into bigger tanks, they get more active and there personality comes through too! :0)

But aslong, as its planted, and temp and filtration is good, he should do fine! :good:

Good luck, and show us some piccies when its set up please! :)
