I bought a lovely Black Moore and a HIllside loach for a small coldwater tank. I got them and they were in pefect health except an anchor worm on the BM.

I went through a long process of medicating the fish to get rid of the worm problem, he immidiately stopped eating when this stuff was added. After the medication the Black Moore seemed his nomal self but still didn't eat.

Now his fins are becoming clamped and I have only noticed him eat 1 flake of food. I've tied differant foods but he doesnt touch anything.

Having done some research I am concerned that the gravel I have in the tank may be too fine for him and he might have swallowed some. Looking at him from a certain angle, it does look like he has a little lump.

The gravel ranges from about 2-5mm.

Im no expert, but I'd have assumed that since fish blindly eat things and spit them out in the wild that there would be a sort of anti-chocking mechanism?!

Can anyone shed some light onto why my fish has gone from normal to bad and isn't eating? ( I do the regular water changes, test for ammonia, nitrate etc. All clear)

I am currently treating the tank with aqua salt and esha 2000 (Clears up all sorts of common fishy problems, velvet, ich, whitespot) and havn't yet seen any progress.

Thanks

EDIT: Just saw the sticky at the top. Here is all the info needed

Size of aquarium/pond - 5.5 Gallon
Types of fish - 1 x Black Moore + 1 x loach
Number of fish and sizes - (2) BM=1.5 Inch Loch = .75 Inch
Filtration used and how do you clean it and how often - Bio filter with active carbon. (Currently have carbon removed because of medication.) I give the spongey filter a quikc squeeze in the old aqaurium water when Im doing every other water change.
How much in the way of water changes and how often -- 1-2 a week. 50% water change
Do you dechlorinate - Yes
Symptoms of sick fish ie, spots, behaviour, etc - Lathargic. Clamped fins, Sits at the bottom of the tank.
How long has the fish been sick and which medications are your currently using or recently used - I bought him about 2 months ago. Treated anchor worm after a couple of weeks (I didn't know what anchor worm was, hence the late treatment)
Test results for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and ph both from the tap and tank - All clear.
Anything else you need us to know -

sorry i cant completely help you but i can maybe reassure you. I have goldfish in a tank thats half gravel half sand, they often go along the gravel sucking it up and spitting it out and the same with the sand (its funny) and never had a problem.

5.5 gallons isnt really adequate for the BM...you say your tests are clear..please put them here for us to see. I personally dont think he has anything stuck, but probably too small a volume of water and maybe still in a cycling tank.
with activated carbon then the meds you use are useless so i would stop all meds and just give good clean water. as far as anchor worm are concerned, tweezers are the best option.

Thanks for the reply. I've done a little research and he seems to be showing signs of hexamita.

I can only find meds on this for discus. Do you think it would be worth giving it a try?

There is the medication in its purest form (can't remembe the name, mexi somthing...) but i can't seem to find it in a small amount. I've taken out the carbon for the duration of the medication.

The Black Moor is 2inches (head + fin). I knew they were big waste producers but I thought 5.5 would be ok for just one?
