I have been looking for an algae eater for awhile now on the local used website. Plecos are always popping up for free, but are usually much bigger than I would like. I came across an add that had 2 12" plecos and an unknown algae eater. Asked for a description and was told that it was checkered. I mailed her a pic of a cae and she said that that was the fish. My tank gets sun for a small part of the day, so algae is a problem. Should I wait it out for a pleco that is the right size or get the cae? I don't mind a bit of algae but at some point it is too much. I have been told the cae in question does his bit to clean the tank. He will be with a 5 1/2" inch oscar and a 4 1/2" striped raphael catfish. What do you think?

Eventually the cae will be Oscar food.
Are you sure? I have heard of these fish being kept sucessfully with oscars, and they average around 6" and can possibly hit 10". There is also a 9" pleco I could get. I was looking for one in the 6-7" range but that is still an option.

I'd be more worried about the CAE attacking the oscar, tbh.

I know it sounds ridiculous but CAE, as they get older, often develop a taste for the slime coat of other fish and flat sided fish, like oscars, are a prime target for them.

That is one of the reasons I'm asking.

Would a cae kepp the algae out? Or should I wait for an appropriate sized pleco?

CAE are actually very poor algae eaters, once they get over the three/four inch mark.
