It's possible that yours went for a walk, they are capable of climbing out of the tank.

They tend to walk out when the water parameters are not good. But i very much doubt he'd had gotten up the stairs!

Maybe it walked out the tank and someone could have trodden on it and it got transported that way? There are numerous possibilities.
