as the title says really, how long can they carry eggs? one of my females looks massive and has for some time, she looks like shes swallowed a football
Cherry barbs' eggs need to drop, which means, if you don't have a male you're not gonna have little ones.
Do you have a male cherry barb? Barbs are egg scatterers, so the male is trying to get her to release the eggs so he can fertilize them. They will adhere to surfaces and hatch a few days later. I'm not into breeding fish, so this may not be exactly right, but I don't think it's far off. BTW, they might eat the eggs if she drops them..
yeah, they make up the majority of my stocking so have got quite a few males, i keep thinking dropsy but i have no idea how long they carry eggs for, hence my question
Maybe try to separate the female (do you just have one?) into another "breading" tank and put a male in with her. Set up a few artificial plants while you're at it, the eggs will probably drop on the plants.
I agree with Blitz. She will carry them until she breeds, so set up a 10 gallon tank with marbles on the bottom, and lots of plants. Turn out the lights, and they should spawn at first light.
