Today I've noticed my Cherry Barbs are 'fidgity' and 'flicking/rubbing' themselves occasionally against the sand substrate... there are no visual signs of any inflamation, soreness, wounds etc...

...is this a bacterial thing? If so, what type - and what recomended med should I use?

...water stats: Am '0', Ni '0', Na '20', Phos '2'. Temp is fine.

...would salt be a good addition to the tank in this case - or is that more for 'wounds'... what type of salt and how much per gallon should I use if it is applicable here?... all other fish seem fine at present... thanks

Sounds like the beginning of 'ich' ( whitespot ).

Raise the temp slowly to around 86d's
Add salt -

PH buffer + Tonic - 1 teaspoon per gallon
Anti-Stress - 1 tablespoon per gallon
Supportive - 3 Tablespoon per gallon

*Caution - Add gradually over 3 -4 days.

hopefully the spots will develop soon, when the last spot has gone leave temp up for 2 weeks after, then lower the temp slowly back to what u had it.

Try this, i hope this helps.
Good luck
:)

Will 'Melafix' work?... I ask as I have some already that I could use 'now'...

I'm not sure that it will.

It wouldn't hurt to try tho, just in case the diagnosis is wrong. :*)

Any laboured breathing, as for the salt need to no which fish you keep, added any new fish to the tank in the last week, sounds like a parasite at this moment in time.

No salt seen your sig, corys and plecs.
