I saw a light at a hardware store, it was a 500w metal halide work lamp. It was $16 Canadian(very cheep). Could this be used to grow aquatic plants? I am not sure if all metal halide lights have a similar light spectrum…..

It was small and had a reasonably nice reflector, I could build a canopy with a couple of them in it....

99% sure it'll be a halogon light Not metal halide...

If it is metal halide buy it ;)

I have halogen over on of my tanks with a sword and vallis which is growing, but not well.

Halogen gives of a high proportion of blue light which algae will love.
