Okay, I uploaded my picture of my fish. Its a little small but you can see em ok. I uploaded the pic as my profile picture. If you can see that? Can you tell me what kind of African Cichlids they are? I know that one is Malawi Golden and maybe the orange and albino are Red Zebra? I am only positive about the Golden. Could anyone else distinguish the sex of these guys.

Thanks,

Charlie

I took some more pics. Hope you can open em. If not I will try other methods

Didn't you ask what they where when you brought them ?

The golden one is a melanochromis auratus the most aggressive and nasty fish you could have brought.

The red ones are metriaclima estherae the white one maybe an albino cant quite tell

the blue with the black fin are pseudotropheus socolofi

Hey charlie,

I am concerned about the size of the tank. Can you please give a brief description of your mbuna setup that you are running at the moment?

They are only in a 10 gallon right now (US.) I am getting a 40 gallon today and will be switching the tanks around. At that time I will add rock caves and such up the back of the tank. Should I use sand?

As for the question on did I ask? They were marked as "assorted" which I have learned my lesson. I will be sure to buy only species specific in the future.

Your welcome.

& Tanks

Oh and btw : ) The malawi golden (Auratus) is the biggest baby. The albino seems to be a little more territorial. But honestly they have been very good thus far. I bought them all together so maybe thats the reason for low hostility?

Just wait until it gets mature... you might want to get rid of it.

Now your scareing me! lol. I know they are going to get bigger. Do you think a 40 is still too small?

I know they require a bigger tank than a 10 but they are small right now so I figured it would be okay as long as I redesign the tank. LOTS O' ROCK....

I might save the bonsai for my Fidlers. Theyd love climbing all over it.

Thanks for all the help everyone.

The cool thing with cichlids is it is actually good to MILDLY overstock. With the tank being busy it makes it much harder for a fish to single out another fish and chase it all day. Filtration is the big part here... if you don't over stock you need a good filter to handle the bio-load. My 55 gal mbuna has a Rena xp3 which can handle a 175 gal tank... A 40 gal should be okay as long as you don't get any cichlids that get larger than 5 inches IMO.

40g is about the smallest tank for mbuna as long as its a long tank as the length is the most important.

The golden one should be removed it will save a lot of trouble later they are killers

Adam or to whom it may concern, have you ever kept chipokae or johanni? I was just curious because as you can see in my sig I have 1 chipokae (female) and 2 johannis (2 males) and I was wondering if they get aggressive enough to the point I wouldn't want them in there?

if i'm 'whoever it may concern' :D

i've kept johanni and the male is a bit boisterous, but nothing too much to worry about... he just picks on the weak, rather than the demasoni - who''l take on anyone

haha I didn't know how to address everyone else, but thank you! My problem is the fact that my sub dominant male johanni is not aloud to leave the corner (says the dominant male). I was curious how to fix this, do I get rid of one the johannis or add females?

Unless you have a really big tank 6ft+ 2 males of most species just wont work they will just continually fight possibly causing damage or even death or one will be forced into a corner to live out a miserable life.

I think there are some exception with species like yellow labs acei.

So should I get one of the males out of there?
