well the girls in the divided girls tank didnt appreciate the fast flow of the hob filter, and no matter what I did to slow the flow it still bothered the one. so I made a cheap sponge filter myself. I first got a very clean plastic container, poked tons of holes in it, put the airline tubeing threw the lid and coiled it in the bottom, then I layered ceramics, then course sponge and then fine sponge on top of the coiled air line. and of couse I couldnt get a good pic of the bubbles coming out, as it kinda bubbles like one of those treasure chests with a fake diver atached.

filter works pretty good and is keeping the tank clean so far, however not so classy looking.

not bad..but you could attach a piece of pvc pipe so that there would be a better flow of bubbles...just a thought though

how and where would I atach a bit of pipe, because it does bobble around a little and the bubbles come put everywhere.

That's why-the-heck-didn't-I-think-of-that brilliance - the most amazing kind!

I've seen DIY filters, usually using hard plastic containers you'd need tools and good hands to make - but this is practical for those of us who haven't actually progressed up the evolutionary ladder to tool-using yet.

Thanks so much, both of you collaborators, for sharing this brilliance with the rest of us and I hope you don't mind my saving this for posterity - i.e. later use when some filter breaks or whatever and I'm wondering where my memory went because wasn't there something...

There is actually a thread in the DIY section somewhere that tells you how to make this filter out of a fishfood pot ( or any pot really ) an airstone , pump, airline, some gravel, filter sponge or filter floss, and some clear plastic tubing. Page 5 has a diagram.
