I have a fluval 3+ internal filter in one of my tanks and I was wondering if there is a cheaper alternative when it comes to changing the fine white thin filter sponge in the middle of the two coarser ( thicker ) sponges.

yer I have that filter aswell but I tend not to use the extra filter element. have you tried the filter without this extra sponge?

just buy filter wool in the bulk in bags or boxes. I use Symec filter wool, cut/tear it to shape and off ya go. currently in my 3+ i have a bag of carbon, if you queeze it enough anything fits in!!

you can also usally rince them out a few times before chucking aswell, just stick em under the hot tap but don't be too rough with me or they break up.

after 4 months i haven't changed my ehiem filter floss yet.
