Hi there looking for cheap smooth stones for a tank, can you use any stone as long as there washed properly, like at garden centers or in woods?

Try the vinegar test. Are you talking about Africans or New Worlds?

If the vinegar fizzes when you place it on the rock, the it is a no-go. If it doesn't fizz, then soak it for a few weeks, and you should be good. And depending on the size of the rock, it is a good idea to boil it for an hour or so. But DON'T place it in cold water after you boil it. Let them cool down in the pot that you boiled them in.

Okay. Good idea with the new worlds! They are some of my favorite fish.

And if it fizzes, then that means that it will leach minerals into your water and raise your pH. Not a good idea.

of course its not right to take them from the beach ... but all mine follwed me home
