Cheap Sands - Buffer Ph?

Well, as I said in my other thread, I'm looking for sand to put in my tank. Most likely will be from Home Depot, as it's dirt cheap there. But I'm wondering if this sand buffers the water?

If so, which sand does?

I was told recently that the best sand to use was the type that is used by swimming pools/spa's for filtering as it doesn't compact and the grains are nicely rounded for cats etc.

That's good as I may be adding some cats down the line. Does it come in brown? As that's the colour I'm hoping for. And does it buffer the PH?
