Dont know what external filter you have, but many have a method of flow control.
I know the Fluval '05 series (amongst others) do !

Not wanting to slow things down ... but to make it more effencient. If this gizmo spreads water better round the whole tank its a good thing.

I have an Eheim 2126 which has a flow control but i dont really want to loose flow just ditribute it more evenly. As I understand it there are great benefits to be had from a high turnover rate.

Planter, its hard to explain. In my opinion it reduces flow speed, so there is less turbulant water flow, but increases circulation. Obviously flow rate is determined by the filter.
