One of the platies in my 55 is chasing after one of the others. It seems like courting to me, not agression. They both seem to have gonopodiums, but they're only 3-4 months old and one could just be clamping its fin (I doubt it). The one being chased is also bigger than the other, so since female platies are bigger than the males...

hiya :)

the juvenile guppies seem to do this too - when its between males I think it may have to do with working out the dominance ranking in the tank

Ok. I noticed this in my 5 gallon, so I should have attributed the chasing to this. However, I would have expected the bigger one to dominate, but dominance also depends on temperament...

Its just a male aggression thing. My male guppies do the same thing. They are always chasing after each other. Its not really violent though (at least with my guppies it isn't). They chase each other so often its like they are schooling (better than my schooling fish!).

I wasn't afraid of it becoming violent. It's just that one wouldn't leave the other one alone, so I was wondering what the gender was and if it would ever die down. There was no nipping whatsoever; just a bunch of swimming next to the other one-- almost like mating.
