Hi all, I have a Juwel Rekord tank that I have had for a few years now. What I would like to do is to get rid of that ugly black box in the corner.(otherwise known as the filter  )

I just have 2 concerns,

1. If I were to go out and buy an external filter could I cycle it by just running the 2 filters at the same time for a week or so?

2. Where would I position the heater? Would I need some sort of cover for it?

You'll be fine running the two filters for a week or two and you could always take some of the media from your existing filter and add it to your new one. It wil help speed up the process.
A lot of people use a tall plant to hide the heater.

no need or point running the two filters at same time

put all the media from the Juwel filter into the external and make sure its done quickly, then top up the external with some kind of ceramic biologcial media and some mechanical filter (if your external is small, just add the mature juwel sponges and some mechanical media)

certainly no point running the two at the same time
