I've got 2 platys and a danio in a cold water tank. I want to change it to a tropical tank but unsure how to change the temperature. Will a sudden change in temperature harm the fish or do I need to gradually increase the temperature?

1-2 degrees increase per day should be fine. The slower the change, the better.

Thanks. I've got a plastic 28l tank, I'm planing on getting a larger glass tank in the next few weeks but is it ok to use a heater in a plastic tank til I upgrade and which heater would be suitable? Wasn't sure if the heater might weaken the plastic?

the temperatures we are talking about (20-30c) will have no effect on plastic whatsoever. Just be sure not to have the heater in direct contact with the plastic, even then it should not be hot enough to cause damage - but just in case.
