changing sponges in a internal filter

i have a internal filter with a single sponge in it.
how do i change the sponge without losing all the benificial bacteria.
should i put the new sponge into the tank for a few weeks so that the bacteria can be cloned?
i really have no idea how to do it.

one way perhaspe would be to cut each sponge in half, and have half the old in teh filter with half teh new and then after a week or so, take out teh oterh old half adn put in the second new half?

Yeah I think thats a good idea OTP. I've never had a single songe filter, but if I had, that's what I'd do

I've not come across a one sponge filter before. I think ^they're right tho.
