Changing Sand

I want to replace all of my sand as it is so dirty and is covered in algae. Can i replace it all? Do you think there will be enough benificial bacteria in the filter? I will only have a plec and a two cardinals in there when i change it.

i have done it before without any ill effects.i didnt do it all at once tho,each time i did a water change(twice a week)i sucked up as much as i could with the vac/python.after 3 water changes it was all out and it didnt effect my water stats at all
