Thinking of changing my substrate from sand to gravel. The tank is about 130L and only has one large angel in and a bristlenose plec.

Is it safe to leave the fish in while i change out the sand for gravel. Also does removing the sand for gravel effect the biology of the water balance.

i used to have sand in my 4ft and i left the 40 or so fishes in.. i removed one sides decor and used a scoop and took out as much as i could slowly moving to the other side

then once i had scoop up most i could i then gravel vacuumed all the remaining bits of sand.. did get very messy but no deaths. should really effect the chemisty at all really.

changing from sand to gravel was my best move ever,

turn your filter off while you do it, itll help prolong the life of the impeller..... why are you changing to gravel ?

following this thread with interest as i want to do the same on 1 tank :good:
scot :)

The sand used to look great when it first when in, it look really fresh and bright. but now it just look dirty and all the waste just sits on top. When its cleaned it never seems to come up like it did.

We have a bigger tank (330L) with gravel and it looks much nicer, so we have decide to get rid of the sand.
