Thanks to my mom ( :grr: ) most of my things in September have been cancelled. But fortunately, she picked up on the idea of breeding bettas and she says I can try. I went to the lfs today and bought a 10gallon tank, rocks and some java ferns. I hope to try early September. Any tips? I already know most of the facts, such as the requirments for breeding and growout tanks.

But, I do have a question. Is it okay to have the tank fuller than "a few inches up?" Our lfs DOES NOT sell corner or sponge filters, so I have to use a regular filter with mesh over it.

Er. If you have to use a regular waterfall filter or anything, I suggest that you don't use it at all. There can be DIY sponge filters that are easily made. Some people start out with more water than required because if it's really hot or something, they can't add more water in or else it'll disturb the spawning or the dad or the fry. GL to you.

Hmm, that could be an idea - but wouldn't the water get dirty? I guess you do move it out while the bubblenest is forming, so if when the fry are hatched, the male is out and they're free swimming, I could just take away the filter and do frequent water changes?
