After my abei died :-( I started to re-stock my tank and currently have 10 cherry shrimp, 3 leopard danios, 3 zebra danios & 3 ottos in the tank and a pair of german blue rams (juveniles). They both seem happy enough but the LFS I bought them from only were concerned by how long the tank had been set-up. So although I have nicely stable parameters they are certainly the wrong ones.

I would like them to breed if possible. To that end I've ordered an RO unit so I can achieve the necessary water parameters [currently I have PH readings around 8  and KH, GH readings that are very high (forget what they are off the top of my head) ].

I was looking for some advice on:

  • how to change my water parameters (i.e. over what time period) - I was going to merely do my (30%)water changes as normal but with the new water (is that gradual enough?)
  • how do I best reconstitute the RO water - I was going to buy seachem american cichlid salts, cichild trace and add those to the recommended levels. Would it also be wise to get Acid regulator (or will the PH out from the RO unit close enough?)

Thanks in advance :good:

Get rid of the Danios, increase the temperature to 30oC, and decrease the PH with peat slugs, the PH should be about 6.5 anyway, regardless of breeding.

My main aim of the RO was to start with a low PH as I understand I need to get this down to a more suitable level (will have a look into peat slugs). What is the reasoning for getting rid of the danios (don't get me wrong, I don't really like them) but was led to believe they were some of the fish that would happily co-exist with the rams.

I'll sort the temperature out too

The Danios wont like the temperature, so before increasing get rid of the Danios.

The Ro water cannot bring the water below 7, because pure water is PH neutral, so Something acidic is required.
