How often should the filter cartridges be changed?

Filter foam should only be changed if it is falling apart and not doing it's job.

Gently Rinse it in tank water to get the larger peices of gunk off every 4-6months or so.

You should actually clean the filter media in tank water every month, not every 4-6 months.
