I know this has been covered before in some topics, but i was wondering if there were any opinions on my plan.

i currently have:

55gallon community, filtered by U/G with 2 powerheads and external filter (Eheim 2213) and a recently purchased, rekord 120 which has been cycling for 2 weeks (used old gunk from other tank to speed things up)

Im looking at replacing the gravel and U/G filter in my 55g tank, and am looking at the following steps.

1. run the external in the rekord for a couple of days, then move fish in.
2. empty 55g, remove U/G and change gravel for sand (will try and save as much water as possible)

Im not sure which will be best option next, run the external back on 55g and let the tank settle back (possibly leaving rekord underfiltered) or move all fish back in and run external & a couple of spare internals to cope with sudden bioload.

Any comments appreciated.

I would leave your 120g cycle another few weeks, make sure all readings are similiar as possible to your 55g, and then gradually move all fish into the 120 (dont want ammonia spikes :) ), I only have about an inch or inch + 1/2 of gravel in my tank, and I switched over to sand before via my fish net, I removed all plants and then pushed the gravel into a giant heap, and then scooped it out via the net, that worked fairly well without having to lose water. Also my net was fairly large, around 6-7 inches wide.
