Hi

Apologies for this appauling picture, which I did on ms paint, but I cannot upload anything to my work 'puter, and I don't currently have a home one.

I want to sex my ram to get him/her a partner, but I'm very confused. In fact, I think it's a he-she :hyper:

It has a long third dorsal fin, and a slightly extended (but not pointy) back dorsal. I believe this is a male attribute.
But also, it has a red belly - I believe this is a female attribute.

(See pic for a very rough guide)

Please can anyone help sex my ram?

Oops - how do I paste an image into here?!
Looked on the forums but I can't find an attachment bar or anything

its difficult with rams , but the main thing to look for in a ram to sex them is the pink belly then it is a female.
here you can see the difference, the one on the left is the female (pink belly) on right is male:

Thanks guys

As far as the red belly goes. It's kinda blotchy (like not all a solid colour) - is this normal?

Hmmmm Bolivian Ram's, they are VERY hard to sex. I havent had them for a while, but i tihnk the males are more blue and have more defined fin's.

You cant always sex them. I purchased a couple of rams which looked identical in every way! At first they didnt get on one always rammed and chased the other but ignored all the other fish and i was on the verge of returning one as I didnt want it to get bullied! They both had reddish bellies, both had identical tails and fins and both had what looked like egg tubes! I assumed they must both be the same sex.

But one suddenly became more colourful and I began to notice a change in behaviour. Instead of chasing and ramming the other it would rush up and then do a little dance! As they both had what appeared to be egg tubes I still didnt make much of it, but then the behaviour changed again. I noticed the brighter one had started to charge the other again but kept going back to a corner and charge every fish in the tank that approached something it had not done before. When I looked I saw it was guarding eggs!

So take heart - even if you dont think you have a pair you might!!

in aquaria it isn't uncommon for 2 females to spawn with each other, I had 2 female jags and they would do it about every two weeks taking turns laying eggs.
