Hi All,

I have been keeping tropical fish for only 6 months, currently I only have a small tank (2ft) but tomorrow I am about to pick up a 4ft tank. I have been using ceramic noodles in my filter for the last 4 months and I am wondering if i can use the ceramic noodles from my current filter to a new bigger filter which i will need to get (suggestions would be helpful) if I use the current ceramic noodles will it reduce the cycling time? Currently I test weekly and have not got an ammonia reading in over 3months.

Cheers for any help in advance,

Duncan

Hi Duncan, yes you can move all of the filter material from your 2 ft tank to the filter of the new tank, are you closing down the 2ft tank? if you are just move all the filter material, but if you are going to increase your fish stock because you have a larger tank,do it gradually, what filter do you have now?and what sort of filter are you going to have in the new tank internal or external?

+1, and also keep in mind that even if you are able to move all the ceramic over to the new filter, the bacteria there are only enough for your two foot tank, so add additional fish slowly so you avoid an ammonia and nitrite spike.

Congrats on the bigger tank!

Hi, Thanks for the replies, I currently use an Elite Hush 10 hang on filter, which does 310Litres an hour. I assume I will need a bigger filter but only have experiences with this hang on type. I am not limited too much in cost so if you can suggest a better type I will def check it out.
For the moment the plan is to move what I have in the 2ft tank:
1 rainbow Shark
2 x Rosy Barbs
2 x tiger Barb
1 x Green tiger Barb
1 x Albino Tiger barb

into the 4ft tank so I am happy to move water and filter media to the new tank.

I am thinking of increasing the number of rosy, tiger and green barbs as well as adding a couple of bristle nose catfish.

I am also interested in breeding the barbs and bristle nose so the 2ft tank would become the nursery tank.

Cheers

Duncan

Should do the job,but I think the new Eheim ECCO PRO 200 which I have had a look at today in my LFS is a great product, the man in my LFS gave me a demo of how it works, cleaned the whole filter out and had it running again in about 2 mins, impressive,I think its what I am going to get when funds allow, have a look on the Eheim web site see what you think
