Everyone has been talking about having ceramics as filter media and I have no clue what these ceramics are.

basically.......they are ceramic :)

this should easily answer your question....

it's ceramic 'noodles', 'balls' 'tubes' or whatever else the manfacturers want to call them

I use them and they're great. Clean up easily and never need to be replaced.

So this is ceramic media? When you use it do you just throw it in the filter or do you stick in some sort of bag?

If I were to stick it in s bag what type of bag should I put it in?

Its mostly used to make the flow of water in the filter fire off in all different directions, bacteria will colonise on it too. smaller filters sometimes have it in a bag while larger externals dont.

You dont need a bag, just chuck it in your filter basket. It is basicly a ceramic without glaze, think of your teacups or mugs, those are ceramic with a protective glaze, Without that glaze ceramics are very porous as they are filled with millions of tiny microscopic holes. Ideal home for our bacteria.

Ok so do marineland penguin 350s have little baskets to throw them in.

Yup.

The 350 has a basket on either side of the intake pump. The basket has grooves for adding the "C" cartridges that fit there. The 200 and 350 actually have an extra slot for the cartridges. I use the extra space in my 200s to put a bag of ceramics in each. My bag is actually a whisper filter cartridge that I had leftover from years ago. I use the bag for ease of removal for a quick and easy rinse every now and then, and then I am able to easily replace the cartridge into the filter without having to root around in the filter to find a loose one or two that will block the cartridge. You don't have to use a bag, but I do. You could use a garlic storage mesh bag or nylons whatever is highly porous, but doesn't have such large holes that the ceramics will fall out.

BY the way, the ceramics you posted are the exact ones that I use.

Ok I'll buy some and I have a mesh bag I'll cut a little piece in it and tie it up.

Put as many pieces into your filter as can fit. I bought the exact same package as the one in the pic you posted. I put about 1/4+ of the package into each of my 200s. I'm sure you can get at least that much in there, without any trouble. The more you put in there, the more space for the bacteria to colonize.

Ok thank you. So 1 box I'm sure will be plenty.

The filter on the tank I'm planning on getting is already cycled I'm just planning on sticking these in for extra media and media to convert to another tank in the future.

Always good to plan ahead! :sly:

Definitely. May even throw some leftovers in my other filters.
