Ceramic Filter Rings , Tetratec

Hi all ,

Just bought a Tetratec 1200 filter, very nice. I understand when to change the media , floss, carbon, ball, but when do i check the ceramic rings?

Any ideas??

Ok, my guidelines for media cleaning/replacement

Floss, Carbon - change monthly in exturnal, or when flow rate dropps, whichever comes first. Carbon is optional, and is best avoided in planted tanks, as it may remove fertilisers.

Bio-balls and Ceramic rings never need replacing. Bioballs may never even need cleaning, but ceramic rings will need rinsing in old tank water once every 6-12 months, no more often. Never replace/rince more than half of these types of media in one go. Rincing severly reduces the amount of bactiria colonising the media.

Just another question. Im running the tetratec with my Juwel 180 internal filter untill the tetratec has matured. I have turned the tetratec down to about a quater flow.

How long should i run the 2 filters before i turn off thr Jewel?

Run both on full power for arround one month, then swich off the jewel. Keep an eye on ammonia and nitrite after the shutdown, to ensure the tank does not go into a minicycle. If a minicycle appears to start in the first few hours, swich the old filter back on again, and try again the following month. Do not maintain the old filter during the changeover, so the tank becomes more dependant on the new filter.

If you moved all of the Existing filters media directly into the carbon media basket, you would be able to swithch off the existing filter imediately. Sorry, I should have pointed this out earlier, but I wrongly assumed you wished to use all new media in the new filter. The bio-media in the existing filter contain most of the bactiria, so by moving them into the new filter, the bactiria move with them, thus allowing the new filter to take over imediately with no repercussions. Just ensure the sponges do not dry out during the transfur, an you will be fine to switch strait away.
