Looking for a "center piece" fish for the 10 gallon, something that is tolerant of hard water would be better as the tapwater here is on the hard side. I'm thinking maybe a Dwarf or Honey Gourami, but being the carnivores they are, will they make a meal out of the ghost shrimp?

The other inhabitants of the tanks will be 2 cherry barbs, 4 zebra danios and 5 ghost shrimp.

How about a pair of Kribensis, they will tolerate harder water than other dwarf cichlids

Youch. 4 danios is already 8 inches of fish. The cherry barbs are also timid and the danios will scare them and gourami because they are so fast. They will also nip a bettas fins to nothing (talking from experience)...
When kribs breed they will take over your whole tank and they are 3 inches a piece. I would say go for something like gourami a might not be a problem but some are more timid then others. A more aggressive dwarf like flame or powder blue would do well with the danios.

Not a betta?

Nope. I want to try something other than bettas.

Hmmm. I may just ditch the cherry barbs and go with the danios, gouramis, and shrimp. Sounds more reasonably stocked to me.

....must....get....bigger....tank..... :fun:

Ryo,
Are Kribensis the ones with the pink blue swollen looking bellies? The male or female I forget which one looks like what. But I think I have a pair of those. The have kinda dayglo orange in the top fin, and some really pretty small line colors on the bodies? Sound familiar?

If the fish you're describing also have a fairly large black circle behind their eye, it sounds like a German Blue Ram (female for the pink belly).

Yup and thankyou for yall's help. They are Kribs, I looked them up. They are some great fish too, very beautiful

That was my reatcion too....is that a coded message st.cichlid??

Instead of a pair, why not get one male or one female krib?? THe colours aren't as great on their own but they are still very pretty....that or a nicely coloured Gourami I agree would be good......

Depending on the size of the tank (which I don't think was mentioned) I would say either a Kribensis or a Dwarf Gourami. I would love to have a Krib but I can't find them in any of my local pet stores. I have a dwarf gourami and it is an amazingly good community fish. I have never seen it go after any of the other fish, not even the molly fry that is in the tank with it.

I wouldn't recommend putting 2 Kribs in a 10US. I would maybe have them on their own in there with a target fish or 2, but I think to add a pair would be too much. In fact, I don't think I'd keep them in anything smaller than a 18US to be honest. My female is quite small but the male I has was about 3"+
