I'm thinking of adding a couple of juvenile blue rams to complete my community (yes I know it's around maximum stocking based on the inch/gallon rule; but I'm also planning to add another 150 l filter, and I keep up a diligent, bordering obsessional, water quality maintenance and testing regime, with of course zero ammonia and nitrite and up to 10ppm nitrate).  The tank was recently heavily planted with cabomba which is growing nicely, and I have a couple of nice medium pieces of bogwood.  So there are hiding places, but I'm thinking I should add a shelter/cave of some sort to ensure rams are happy and non-aggressive.  I won't have a lot of floorspace, what with the wood and cabomba planting, so I'm looking for a small, natural cave.  Considering half coconut with java moss on top, hidden amongst the cabomba, but would ideally prefer some other options for something natural but smaller.  I'm not keen on building a cave from slate and sealant, don't like the idea of sealant and my design skills would result in something engineered rather than natural looking (I'm an aerospace engineer by profession!).  My supplier holds them in pH 7, my tank is 7.6 so would require a slow acclimatisation, hardness is medium and I'd take the temp up from current 25C to 26C.  Any other suggestions which wouldn't take too much room but would provide security for rams? Thanks!

I would say the coconut is the easy way to do it then. I have a 75 liter cube that i am assembling for a high-tech at the moment i used dragonstone rock to make a cave. I did not use any sealant. i really just made sure the pieces of stone were safely supporting each other. I used the design of cube to do it as i made my cave in one of the corners of tank so the sides of the tank help keep them in place.
To be honest i use to do it alot in my begginer days and never had any problem.
But if you feel insecure go for the coconut and moss thing well integrated with the layout its a great way to make a cave.
