i have just found one of my guppies dead (first fish to die =( since i started ) in a small cave in my 60L. he was missing most/all of his tail. im not sure how long hes been there but defenatly under 5 days he looks since on tuesday just a few small tares in his tail like the other two dose this mean they are at risk. im not sure if it is an illness or if the danios have been nipping them. i assumed it was the danios but im not to sure now because there was nothing lest of his tail. what is the most likely cause?
thanks

Danio's may nip but generally their ok.

  • How long have you had the tank?
  • How long have you had the guppies?
  • When was the last time u added any fish?
  • Do u do water changes?
  • When was the last time and how often do u do water changes?
  • Do you test your water? if so what do u test for and what are the readings?
Answering these questions will allow us to help you much better.
As there are many things that can cause this problem.

The tank has been set up for 6 months,
the guppies have been in since may,
i added fish about 2months ago (platies and ottos),
i do a 30% water change every week,
my last water change was tuesday,
i dont have a test kit yet.
thanks for the reply.

What is the size of the tank?
also filteration?

Was thinking poor water but your doing the right things. still an ammonia, nitrIte and nitrAte test would be good.

Danio's generaly ok i find, but if one goes rouge then of course it's possible for them to shred finnage :(
All your other fish should not be a problem

its a 60L elite with a elite stingray filter. i have never seen the danios nipping anyone but they still could be.
thanks

Stingray filters can be a little strong. i would suspect it probable old age if their was no signs before and that the fin was damaged by the filter if you saw no redness before.

Sorry just happens sometimes.

it probably was the filter, im just struggling to picture how it would do that sort of damage to the guppy. the other guppys in the tank also have torn tails should i get a new filter ASAP or would that be over reacting?
