Catus Compost . Anyone Using It ?

Hi All
is there anyone out there using catus compost . i have heard it can be used in planted tanks .under the sand\gravel .i was wondering if it works ok .

I did read about it b4, and i tried in my nano tank, seems ok, however, do remember cover a lot of gravel on top of it.


BTW, why cactus compost, wot is the difference between normal compost and it?

not sure mate .dont think i have ever seen a bag of compost . did your plants grow ok in this stuff then

you can find them in B&Q, £3 a bag. I just set up the tank, so still can not tell the difference. My old tank just use gravel, so i think anything added should contribute sooner or later.

However, i used to worry about the fish in that tank. But my endler fry seems doing good

do you have any pictures of what this stuff looks like ? did you just put sand on the top of it .or did u use something like a gravel tidy

u mean the compost? It just called cactus compost, writen on the bag. I bought it ages ago, do not have the bag any more.

I just put it in the tank, and carefully cover gravel on top of it, then plant. sometimes if you unplug plants, u will get some compost out, but not too many.

No, i can not take the pic, because it is underneath the gravel now, can not see it.

But it is soil, just on the bag it said, specially for cactus.

Cactus compost is used over other composts as it doesn't seem to effect water parameters anywhere near as much as standard composts do. Could be because it doesn't contain peat? I used it for about a year under some gravel but eventually got fed up with it as everytime I moved a plant it would come out with the roots and make a right mess. It does seem to work well and I grew some lovely Crypts. Soak it for 3 weeks before using to get rid of any ammonia that may be present. I actually bunged mine straight in without any probs but that may have been down to luck though. Looks just like normal compost really but possible a bit more gritty.
