If you are referring to one of the African drift lake's cichlids, then the natural choices are either Synodontis Multipunctatus or Petricola. Both requires decent sized tank (55g or larger) and both are rather expensive. Petricola is somewhat smaller than Multipunctatus but still grows to 4 inches or so. They are also much more active if you have 4 or more.
one problem I see, the cichlids have teeth. They have a tendency to nip other fish. The catfish have no scales, so i would think one nip would really hurt the catfish.
We'll need to know, of course, what kind of Cichlids you're referring to - but, if it's African cichlids, I have kept, sucessfully, Synodontis Batensodas in my setup. I love the little guys, especially when they cruise around upside down.
